Spitzer Observations of Centaurus A: Synchrotron Emission in the Infrared
نویسنده
چکیده
We present measurements obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope in five bands from 3.6–24μm of the northern inner radio lobe of Centaurus A, the nearest powerful radio galaxy. We show that this emission is synchrotron in origin. Comparison with ultraviolet observations from GALEX shows that diffuse ultraviolet emission exists in a smaller region than the infrared but also coinciding with the radio jet. It is plausible that synchrotron emission extends to ultraviolet wavelengths without a break, however further data are required to confirm this. متن کاملThe infrared jet in Centaurus A : multiwavelength constraints on emission mechanisms and particle acceleration
We report on Spitzer and Gemini observations of the jet of Centaurus A in the infrared, which we combine with radio, ultraviolet and X-ray data. Spitzer detects jet emission from about 2 arcmin from the nucleus, becoming particularly bright after the jet flare point at ∼ 3.4 arcmin. Where X-ray and infrared emission are seen together the broad-band data strongly support a synchrotron origin for...
متن کاملModeling the Infrared Emission from Cygnus A by George C . Privon
The Spitzer Space Telescope provides a unique view of the Universe at infrared wavelengths. Improved sensitivity and angular resolution over previous missions enable detailed studies of astrophysical objects, both in imaging and spectroscopic modes. Spitzer observations of active galactic nuclei can help shed light on the physical conditions of the central regions of these active glalaxies. The...
متن کاملA Spitzer Study of Dusty Disks in the Scorpius-centaurus Ob Association
We have obtained Spitzer Space Telescope MIPS observations of 40 Fand G-type common proper motion members of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB Association with ages between 5 and 20 Myr at 24 μm and 70 μm. We report the detection of fourteen objects which possess 24 μm fluxes ≥30% larger than their predicted photospheres, tentatively corresponding to a disk fraction of ≥35%, including seven objects whi...
متن کاملThe Role of the Synchrotron Component in the mid Infrared Spectrum
We study in detail the mid-infrared Spitzer-IRS spectrum of M 87 in the range 5 to 20 μm. Thanks to the high sensitivity of our Spitzer-IRS spectra we can disentangle the stellar and nuclear components of this active galaxy. To this end we have properly subtracted from the M 87 spectrum, the contribution of the underlying stellar continuum, derived from passive Virgo galaxies in our sample. The...
